Royal palace · Self-guided · ★4.5 from 112 reviews
Fronteira shows how a great noble family lived in the 17th century. The Ajuda National Palace shows how the royal family lived two centuries later: the official residence of the Portuguese monarchy in the late 1800s.
Many of the royal apartments are kept as they were, with their furniture and decoration, along with the vast state rooms: the throne room, the ballroom and the banqueting hall.
It sits on the hill above Belém, so it combines well with the monuments by the river, and makes a good second palace for a Lisbon trip without leaving the city.
Ajuda is about 20 minutes by car from Fronteira. Do Fronteira in the morning, Ajuda after lunch, and finish in Belém by the river.
