Open on public holidays. The foundation occasionally runs gardens-only days when the house is used for events, and announces them on its site. Tour times have changed over the years, so confirm your slot when you book.
The guided tour takes you through the rooms the family opens to visitors: the Battle Room, with its tile panels of the Restoration War; the Panel Room; the Four Seasons Room; the Juno Room; and the library.
You then walk out along the Liberal Arts Terrace, with its niches of tiled gods and arts, to the chapel with its shell-and-porcelain façade. The tour ends in the gardens, where you can stay as long as you like.
This is the ticket for anyone who has come for the azulejos: the Battle Room is the single most remarkable room of 17th-century tiles in Lisbon.
The garden ticket gives you the formal parterre with its fountains and seasonal tile panels, the Knights' Lake, the Gallery of Kings, the Venus garden and the Casa do Fresco grotto.
You can come any time between 10:00 and 18:00 without a slot, and the audio guide (+€2) explains the tiles and statues as you go.
It is a fine visit on its own, but you will miss the Battle Room and the house itself. If you are travelling all the way to Benfica, the extra €7 for the tour is worth it.
